SECOND CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS OF PAPERS, PANELS, AND WORKSHOPS
2020 Eastern Communication Association 111th Annual Convention
April 1-5, 2020

Convention Theme: “Harboring Innovation”
The Communication Administration Interest Group invites submissions for the annual ECA Convention to be held April 1-5, 2020. The 111th convention will be held at the Hyatt Regency Inner Harbor Hotel, located in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The deadline for electronic submissions is October 15, 2019. The convention theme, “Harboring Innovation,” encourages us to examine the standard tools and practices that we use in communication administration from new perspectives and to explore how alternative styles and methods of administrative communication might be used to facilitate improved outcomes. What advantages accrue to innovation, to disruption, and to the tried and true? We encourage submitters to consider individual papers, thematic panels, workshop sessions, and round table discussions that explore these issues and related questions.
All submissions should be uploaded to and processed through Attendee Interactive at the following site: https://ww4.aievolution.com/eca2001/index.cfm
Submissions received outside of the Attendee Interactive site will not be considered for acceptance.
Competitive Papers
Abstracts or incomplete papers are not acceptable in this category. Submissions of completed papers should be no more than 25 pages, excluding title page, abstract, references, and appendices. Submissions related to Communication Administration must include:
- Title
- Detachable title page, to include the title of the paper and the author(s)’ institutional affiliation(s), mailing address(es), telephone number(s), and e-mail address(es)
- Paper Abstract on the second page (no more than one page of text)
- Statement of Professional Responsibility (see below)
- Designation of Student Paper, as appropriate, for authors who are fully enrolled students
- Designation of Debut Paper, as appropriate, for papers written by authors who have not presented previously at a regional or a national convention
- Special requests (ADA room, etc.)
- Audio visual and/or Wi-Fi request, if necessary. Not guaranteed.
- Uploaded final paper (Word or PDF format) with all identifying information removed for blind review
- If paper has multiple authors, indicate which author will present the work at the convention
- Any additional documents, if necessary (Microsoft Word or PDF format)
Program/Panel Proposal
All program/panel submissions related to Communication Administration should be uploaded as one Microsoft Word file or PDF file, and must include:
- A thematic title for the program/panel
- The names and institutional affiliations of the Chair and Respondent (if any). Chairs and Respondents should be two different individuals, preferably from different institutions
- The names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and institutional affiliations of all program/panel participants. Presenters should not serve as chairs or as respondents
- Supporting documents that include titles and brief abstracts for each paper or presentation
- Program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program
- A detailed rationale for the program/panel
- Special requests (ADA room, etc.)
- Estimated attendance
- Audio visual and/or Wi-Fi request, if necessary. Not guaranteed.
- Statement of Professional Responsibility (see below)
Workshop Session Proposal
Submissions in this category should feature two or three experts who will address the audience about a pertinent topic related to Communication Administration and will then invite audience participation. Submissions in this category should be uploaded as one Microsoft Word file or PDF file and must include:
- A thematic title for the workshop
- A detailed rationale for the workshop
- The names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and institutional affiliations of all workshop participants (Ideally, participants will come from different institutions)
- Program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program
- Special requests (ADA room, etc.)
- Estimated attendance
- Audio visual and/or Wi-Fi request, if necessary. Not guaranteed.
- Statement of Professional Responsibility (see below)
Round Table Discussion Proposal
Submissions in this category should feature five to eight presenters who share brief position papers on a single, focused topic related to Communication Administration. Submissions in this category should be uploaded as one Microsoft Word file or PDF file and must include:
- A thematic title for the round table discussion
- A detailed rationale for the round table discussion
- The names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and institutional affiliations of all round table participants (Ideally, participants will come from a variety of institutions)
- Program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program
- Special requests (ADA room, etc.)
- Estimated attendance
- Audio visual or Wi-Fi request, if necessary. Not guaranteed.
- Statement of Professional Responsibility (see below)
Statement of Professional Responsibility
When submitting a paper or a proposal for review, the following statement MUST be included. Papers and other session proposals submitted without this statement will not be considered for programming.
"In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/we agree to register for the ECA convention, pay fees, and present the work." I/we understand that presenters with last- minute emergencies should take all possible measures to arrange for an alternate presenter and communicate their plans to both the Interest Group Planner and the ECA First Vice President.”
The 2020 ECA Convention will feature a series of research workshops. Dr. Andrew Hayes, Professor of Psychology and Communication at The Ohio State University, will be facilitating two half-day research workshops. The first will be titled, “Integrating Mediation and Moderation Analysis: Fundamentals using PROCESS.” A second workshop, “Mediation Analysis with Distinguishable Dyadic Data,” will be offed in conjunction with two of Dr. Hayes’ doctoral students, Jacob J. Coutts and Tao Jiang. Dr. Heather Stuckey, Associate Professor of Medicine, Humanities, and Public Health Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University Hershey College of Medicine, will conduct a third workshop on “Best Practices for Qualitative Communication Research.” Workshops for rhetorical scholars are also promised but have not yet been identified or opened for registration. Pre-registration information for the existing sessions has been posted to CRTNET and is available on the ECA web site; workshops will be offered at nominal cost to attendees.
Dr. Andrew Hayes will also serve as the convention’s keynoter, speaking on: “From Graduate School to Retirement: Creating, Managing, and Refreshing a Meaningful Academic Career.” His remarks will target scholars in all career stages, from graduate student to full professor, as he discusses suggestions for career management and motivation.
