Central States Communication Association (CSCA) 

Annual Convention-Grand Rapids, Michigan 

April 2-7, 2024 

Conference Theme:  Incoherence:  Failure, futures, and forgotten messages 

The Undergraduate Education & Administration (UE&A) Section invites submissions of competitive papers, panels, roundtable discussions, and innovative programming for the 2024 CSCA convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan (submissions deadline is 11:59pm CDT on Saturday, October 7, 2023). The purpose of the Undergraduate Education & Administration Section is to promote collaboration and highlight efforts of teachers, scholars, and administrators interested in academic institutions serving students at the undergraduate level. Our goal is to develop a strong network amongst our members to engage on topics related to curriculum/programming, pedagogy, scholarly relationships, and academic organizations within an undergraduate-focused disciplinary program related to Communication. The section is open to all CSCA members interested in undergraduate programs. Membership does not count as one of your three interest groups. You may be a section member in addition to any of the interest groups to which you already belong. 

Any topics related to issues facing undergraduate institutions are welcome. We are especially looking for papers and panels that support the conference theme of Incoherence: Failure, futures, and forgotten messages and that seek to re-engage the communication discipline at the undergraduate level. We welcome panels and papers that integrate both education and administration, panels that address concerns of undergraduate institutions in higher education, and ways in which this section can best serve our CSCA constituents. Our conference planner is seeking unique ways to address the conference theme, so thinking about different panel formats, co-sponsorships, are welcome.   

Papers: Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must include a title and a brief abstract. 

Author name(s) and identifying information must be removed from the paper prior to submission. 

Graduate students should type “STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. If the paper will be a graduate student debut, please type “DEBUT STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. To be considered a graduate student debut paper, (1) the author must be a graduate student, (2) the paper must have single authorship, and (3) the paper must be the author’s first paper to be presented at CSCA. Indicate if author(s) are CSCA members. Author’s name and identifying information must be removed from the paper prior to submission. 

The Equity and Inclusion Scholarship Award is sponsored by the CSCA Equity & Inclusion Committee (EIC).  Its purpose is to highlight the most promising work by scholars in the areas of equity and inclusion. If you would like to be considered for the EIC Award, please clearly articulate, in at least one paragraph, how the respective scholarship explicitly addresses equity and inclusion. Additionally, be sure to select the Equity and Inclusion Scholarship option when you submit your paper.

Panels: We welcome Debut Panels, Paper Panels, Discussion Panels, Debate Panels, or other innovative formats you think would be appropriate for discussing issues related to undergraduate education. We especially favor panels that represent diverse institutions and diverse types of educational institutions and educators/administrators. No one person should serve more than one role on a panel (e.g., a chair should not be a paper presenter or discussant on the same panel). Spotlight panels highlighting particularly unique or successful undergraduate programming would also be welcome. 

All panel submissions must include the following: (a) panel title, (b) overall panel description (75 words or less), (c) rationale for the panel (75 words or less), and (d) a complete list of participants along with their institutional affiliations, contact information (address, e-mail, and telephone), and whether they are CSCA members. Paper panels should also include titles and brief abstracts (100 words or less) for each paper. 

For all submissions, technology requests must be made at the time of submission. Please only request technology if it is essential to your presentation. Laptop computers will not be made available for presentations. 

All submissions must be sent electronically through the online system via the CSCA website. Submissions must be received by 11:59pm CDT on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Information about the technology policy, and submission details can be found at https://www.csca-net.org (under the convention tab). 

All submitters are encouraged to create a profile on the CSCA convention webpage. This will help to facilitate the ease of the entire submission and notification process.
